MOCK COMPETITION

Mock competition is March 1, 2025 at Borden Community Centre in the main hall.

This is a mandatory dance practice for all competition dancers. Please arrive at 8:45 a.m as we want to begin at 9:00 a.m. Upon arrival, have your dancer head down to the basement to get dressed into their first costume. We will have a schedule for the day posted.

Please have your dancer dressed in practice tights and a bodysuit (dancers who require, please wear dance bras). Hair is to be neatly secured back. No make up.

Mock competition should be done running through by 12:30; however, we encourage parents to stay and learn what costumes their dancer will be wearing for each dance and ask questions in regard to hair, makeup, competition, etc.

Please be sure to have breakfast before you arrive. There will be no food or drinks while in costumes, only water. No males in the Norman Smith Room as that will be the girls changing area.

Following mock competition, Miss Tara will be running through her regular Friday classes as there will be no classes on Friday, March 7. The schedule is as follows:

12:45 - 1:30 Beginner Hip Hop

1:30 - 2:15 Beginner/Junior Tap

2:15 - 3:15 Beginner/Junior Acro

3:15 - 4:00 Junior Hip Hop

THINGS TO KNOW:

  • There is no nail polish allowed on stage. If you have gel nails, you must have a skin tone polish or a basic french manicure.

  • All girls, if needed, are to wear a beige bra with CLEAR straps and a CLEAR back. Dancers are also welcome to wear round nipple pasties if preferred over a bra or a strapless bra.

  • HipHop dancers of ALL ages must wear a bra underneath their costume shirt. This bra can either be a dance bra as described above or If the shirt will fully cover the bra, a sports bra can be worn in the same colour as the shirt. This is to ensure the dancer is covered in the case of a loose shirt riding up in any moves that require the dancer’s body to be over their head.

  • Body liners are not to be worn unless they are a thong and approved by the instructor.

  • Packing extras. A few bonus items to bring to competitions are a Tide-To-Go pen, extra clear bra straps/back straps, glitter spray (Brand name - Graftobian; Colour - opalescent and if they’re out, silver - can be found at Dance Street), sewing kit with thread colours that match your costumes, double-sided sticky tape, body glue, nail polish remover, first aid kit (ice pack, tensor, bandaids, advil/tylenol, scissors), straw style water bottle with WATER only, liquid bandaid, makeup wipes, eyelash glue, static guard, safety pins, razor, lint roller, super glue, hot glue gun, nail clippers, nail file, extra shoe laces.

Hair Quick Guide & Tutorials

General Guidelines

It is easiest to manage hair that is damp and has gel worked through it before trying to secure it back into a bun. Especially for children with fine hair. Whether trying to secure bangs back or putting it up into a ponytail or braids, working with dampened hair that has a sticky gel worked through before combing back will give the best results. All hair MUST be off of the face, regardless of the hairstyle. Bangs MUST be dry pulled straight back off the face. Hair and makeup may be subjected to change. However, you will be notified in advance.

(If on the mobile version tap the arrows to view more and find your hair requirement.)

Here is a list of suggested supplies you may need for doing your dancer's hair!

  • Ponytails and bobby pins that match your dancer's hair colour. Get LOTS of extras!

  • Mini Clear Elastics

  • Bun maker or donut, if needed.

  • Hair gel.

  • Hairspray.

  • Hairbrush

  • Fine Tooth Comb

  • Edge Control Comb

  • Hair Wax Stick

  • Conditioner (works great as a pre gel, it helps to slick the hair but keeps it workable. When you have it how you want it, add wax or gel and hairspray to secure).

  • Curly ponytail hairpiece (if needed).

HAIR TUTORIALS:

How to: Bun

On dampened hair thoroughly apply a thick gel to slick the hair and make it workable. After applying the gel, brush back and up and secure with a hair elastic into a ponytail in the designated bun position given by your instructor.

*If the bun is a low bun, the part will go over the left side. See below for Low Straight Ponytail for more guidance.

Then, depending upon the length of the hair, twist the hair and wrap it in a circle around the elastic and secure all loose ends with bobby pins until there are no loose or unsecured areas of the bun. You may need more bobby pins for areas above the ears or at the nape of the neck. Extra thick hair may require an extra hair elastic.

Hairnets are required for all buns. Please make sure your hairnet matches the colour of your dancer's hair.

How to: Double Dutch Braids
Please see the attached video for the best tutorial on how to double dutch braid.
Essentially, they are a braid going under, rather than over.

Double Dutch Braids pinned up:

Please see the attached video for the best tutorial on how to double dutch braid. After your hair is in the braids, you will wrap them together following the back of the head to make them lay flat, pinning them up along the braid to stay in place.

Double Dutch bun:

Please see the attached video for the best tutorial on how to double dutch braid. For this hairstyle, you do not need to braid all the way to the ends. braid to the bottom of the head where a regular ballet bun sits. Once you've reached that point you will tie off your braid. Repeat for the second braid. Once both braids are done, you'll tie the two braids together and wrap the remaining ponytail into a ballet bun.

Double Dutch Sleek High Ponytail:

Please see the attached video for the best tutorial on how to double dutch braid ponytail. Essentially, make your two double dutch braids, tie each one once you get to the top back of the head, tie them together, and add the remaining hair.

Fake Eyelashes
It is recommended to add eyeliner before adding lashes rather than after. Mascara on the lash before adding the fake lashes can help to blend the natural lash to the fake lash and can help with product buildup on the lashes which can affect their appearance and lifespan. Fake eyelashes are reusable. See the video below on how to apply a basic strip lash with the recommended glue.
